My goal as an educator is to not only teach art skills. Of course, they will make art and take home something tangible to show and be proud of, but I want them to also take home the intangible. I want them to learn how to look at art with a critical eye because it will help them examine life and humanity more closely. I want my students to learn to think beyond the paint and form. I want them to ask why and how and not just in art. My hope is that they take this inquisitive practice with them throughout their lives and never stop asking how and why. I want them to get in the habit of noticing beauty in difference, in unexpected places and in the tiniest of details. I want them to see and appreciate themselves as a beautiful work of art. Art makes everything better and they have the power to do the same.
